Bruce Canfield's books are invariably well-researched and complete. What is more important, he has the ability to make topic(s) that can be very dry & technical [ie: "b-o-r-i-i-i-n-g!"] into something engaging and worthwhile. If this book has a problem it is that it is a MIGHTY TOME, and it really should have been broken down into two volumes to make reading it less of a [physical] chore. Due to the book's large size & substantial composition [ie, it's a quality binding on premium grade paper stock], you pretty much HAVE to sit at a table to read it: it's just not a comfortable item to keep on the bedside table to peruse before lights-out. Ah, the price of success! ;-) I have several of Canfield's other books, and this one is truly his masterpiece. Worth every penny!
This book is 100% worth the big price. I just ordered my first Garand and wanted to bone up on the subject so that I knew what I was looking at once it arrives. The book just has so much information and it is very clearly written, and very interesting. The author weaves a giant, epic story into one cohesive book. I have not been reading it straight through but just been jumping around to different parts that interested me. There are tons of illustrations and great photographs. The chapters and sections are also clearly divided so it is easy to just thumb through it until you find the part you are interested in. Don't buy this book if you are looking for descriptions of how to maintain the rifle or how to assemble/disassemble it. This book relays the history, background and use of the M-1 throughout the world and it does a great job at that.
A pretty comprehensive and interesting book about a game-changing firearm from WWII, one that helped us to win the war and is still a coveted target-shooting rifle today. It spawned a bunch of other rifles as well. Some people might consider this an "assault rifle" since it is powerful and semi-auto, but it gave the "good guys" in WWII a great advantage in both Europe and Asia and has a place in history. Its birthing and development and uses, and stories about it, are in this book.

The best gun book I have ever encountered. Heroic in scale and scope, which is appropriate for this heroic rifle. By any possible criteria, Canfield has produced a magnum opus of firearm literature. The story of the Garand told from the beginning, in intricate detail. Profusely illustrated with everything from archival photos to draftsmen's renderings, the tortuous history of John Garand's brilliant creation comes alive like never before. Every time I open this book I am amazed by the sheer, muscular feat of documentation Canfield has achieved. Five stars is simply not enough.
Excellent book. Thorough and well researched. Approximately the first 1/3 of the book covers the different precursor rifles that John Garand developed and learned from before finalizing the design that became the M1. Plenty of data and pictures organized in the chronological order of the development and refinement of the M1. I found this book to be very useful and wish that I had this resource almost 20 years ago when I started collecting M1's.
A wonderful book that takes the user through the history of the M1 Garand. As a collector, next to the Scott Duff Garand publications, this is a must have. The book is extremely informative with detailed illustrations, pictures, drawings and factual data of the day. This is the book that can serve as the one stop for everything you ever wanted to know about the M1 Garand. Highly recommend.
Hi, this is the most researched book ever on the M1 Garand. Canfield knows his stuff and combines a ton of information from numerous sources in one book. If you have an interest in the history of firearms or the M1 Garand this is the new "bible".I think that the printing/binding leave something to be desired in such a great,and heavy book. I have Mr. Canfields other books and they were printed in the US and they, after 10 years still look like new. Just a quibble because I love books,but I'm happy with my purchase and recommend it to all students of firearms history.
